Metallurgical and Manufacturing Services: PV Solar Installations of 109 KWp. “Harnessing the Sun for Cost Efficiency”

SunRanch Solar is pleased to announce the successful completion of our latest installation, a Grid-Tied Solar System at Metallurgical and Manufacturing Services (“MMS”) located in Centurion, Gauteng.

The Project was completed in three weeks and connects directly to the main Grid Provider supply point, delivering significant cost savings and reducing grid electrical consumption. Despite the limited roof space, SunRanch successfully installed a PV system of a 108.48 kWp in size.

PV Plant & Equipment:
Key components of the PV plant consist of high-performance JA Solar panels (565W/LR) and a Huawei inverter to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability.
Grid-Tied Inverters: 1x Huawei Technologies SUN2000-100KTL-M2
Solar Panels: 192x JA Solar JAM72S30 565/LR Tier 1

Prioritizing our customer’s risk analysis, SunRanch conducted a comprehensive lightning risk assessment and obtained structural approval before project installation. These measures ensure the utmost protection for both human life and the business premises.

With this project, SunRanch Solar continues to lead the way in sustainable, cost effective and safe solar solutions.

About Metallurgical and Manufacturing Services (“MMS”)
Founded in February 1998 by Dion Greyling and Christo Botes, Metallurgical & Manufacturing Services (MMS) emerged from a pivotal moment in South Africa's industrial landscape. Following a downscaling action by the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa at Pelindaba, MMS was established to address a growing need for specialized welding services in the industry.

MMS has carved a niche in the field of welding and manufacturing, focusing on components made from sophisticated engineering alloys. The company excels in handling a diverse array of materials, including:

  • Aluminium
  • Nickel and copper-based alloys
  • Titanium and titanium alloys
  • Wear and corrosion-resistant alloys such as Stellite and Monel
  • Carbon steels, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA), and high-alloy steels
  • Various types of stainless steels, including austenitic, precipitation-hardened, super/duplex, martensitic, and ferritic

A notable strength of MMS is its capability to join dissimilar alloys, such as copper to stainless steel, showcasing its advanced technical expertise.

Operating out of Centurion, Gauteng, spanning 2,900 square meters, MMS’s facilities are meticulously designed to support a comprehensive range of activities required for the refurbishment and manufacturing of level one metallic products. The setup aims to minimize outsourcing needs and reduce lead times. The workspace is segmented into five business units, each equipped to handle different aspects of production.

Machining and Heat Treatment: MMS houses CNC and manual machining equipment alongside heat treatment facilities. The heat treatment section includes two main units for large components and two ovens for smaller components, ensuring precision in thermal processing.

Welding Expertise: The welding department is versatile, accommodating various processes tailored to client specifications and industry standards. It features turntables for automated MIG and FCAW welding, as well as dedicated bays for intricate manual welding processes. MMS’s welding capabilities include:

  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG)
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)
  • Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW)
  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/STICK)
  • Advanced processes like Electron Beam Welding (EBW), Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA), and Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) welding

The CMT welding technology is particularly notable for its use in 3D printing/additive remanufacturing and rapid prototyping. MMS’s welding and machining coordination team comprises international welding technologists and engineers, inspectors, and seasoned metallurgists. This team ensures adherence to codes and standards, guaranteeing that components meet OEM specifications and client requirements. All welders are qualified under ASME IX (9) and ISO 9606-1. MMS upholds high standards of quality and compliance through ISO 9001 and ISO 3834-2 accreditations. The company offers over 150 qualified welding procedures covering a broad range of materials and thicknesses, underscoring its dedication to meeting industry needs and client demands.
